Ok. You've stopped smoking. That great. And you haven't switched to vaping e-cigarettes either. Even better!
But please note that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends yearly lung cancer screening with LDCT (Low Dose Computed Tomography) for people who:
Heavy smoking means a smoking history of 30 pack years or more. A pack year is smoking an average of one pack of 20 cigarettes per day for one year. For example, a person could have a 30 pack-year history by smoking one pack a day for 30 years or two packs a day for 15 years.
Such a mass screening hasn't been adopted by the NHS because mass screening can produce a large numer of false positives. A false positive is where the screening test detects a sign that turns out to be harmless. In cases of lung cancer this would usually be when a lesion (abnormality in tissue) is detected, but the lesion turns out to be non-cancerous (benign) - and the follow up procedures/surgery for false positives can be expensive for the health service and cause unnecessary and undesirable medical complications.
Currently, testing for lung cancer in the NHS is normally only offered to people with symptoms associated with lung cancer, such as coughing up blood or persistent unexplained weight loss. However, crucially, the delay in detecting cancer, using this approach, often means that the cancer can be detected too late for the latest treatments and drugs that are available to treat the cancer successfully.
If you are a current, or former, smoker, and your smoking history falls within the criteria above it might well be worth you arranging, either through your GP, or privately (possibly through private health insurance), to have regular LDCT lung cancer screening to catch any lung cancer malignancy as soon as possible so that remedial action can be taken.
