Therapy at the Surrey Hypnotherapy Clinic TM

A very specialised and unique form of 'hypnotherapy' is used by Surrey Hypnotherapist Peter Back at the Surrey Hypnotherapy Clinic - a therapy that Peter has progressively refined and improved over the years, to incorporate the 'good parts' of various possible approaches to therapy, whilst at the same time eliminating the 'not so good parts' associated with some of the approaches to therapy.

For example:

  • Peter offers a free initial consultation for all clients, where Peter explains how the therapy works and why it works.
  • Peter likes to make it clear that, although some clients can (unusually) complete their therapy in a single session, he would normally expect a client's therapy to take, typically, 6 to 10 sessions, and that, as a general rule, a maximum number of no more than 12 sessions is normally allowed in any course of therapy to ensure that client's are aware that therapy isn't an open ended process. However even just a few sessions will be helpful to the client.
  • Peter understands the technical difficulties that may arise from a therapist who is not focussed entirely on the needs of the client - and Peter uses special therapeutic technques to ensure that therapeutic focus is maintained solely on the client's therapy and well being.
  • Peter understands the technical difficulties that may arise from a client, or therapist, having pre-conceived ideas of what is, and what is not, important to the client's therapy - and again uses special therapeutic techniques to ensure that the direction of travel of the therapy is always consistent with the client's well being and improvement.
  • Peter's sole objective as a therapist is for his client's to have an effective, worthwhile, and enjoyable experience of therapy, for example, by using a nice relaxing hypnotic induction rather than the quicker, yet potentially more uncomfortable and disconcerting, 'instant' hypnotic inductions used by some therapists1.
  • Unlike some therapists, Peter has experienced the therapy himself, as part of his training (many years ago!) - so Peter has a very good first hand experience and understanding of what therapy is like from a client's perspective.

ISSUES HELPED

The range of ailments and problems that hypnotherapy can relieve are many and varied. If you are in any doubt about whether hypnotherapy is appropriate for your particular issue(s) just e-mail Peter and ask.

To assist you, some of the issues that hypnotherapy has been used to help people with are anger management, stress, anxiety, losing weight, self confidence, self esteem, career success, IBS, worries, relationships, sexuality and more.

HYPNOSIS FAQ's

  • Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis in the treatment of emotional, psychogenetic and psychosomatic problems.
  • Hypnosis is a state of enhanced relaxation in which the mind becomes remote and detached from everyday cares and concerns. In such a relaxed state the subconscious part of the mind is best able to respond creatively to suggestion and imagery by the therapist.
  • Hypnotherapy can be used for almost any problem treatable by psychotherapy and also for many physical ailments.

INDUCING HYPNOSIS

Peter induces the hypnotic state with a combination of:

  • Counting down numbers.
  • Using music, voice and images.
  • Relaxing parts of the body e.g. arms, legs, neck.

CAN ANYONE BE HYPNOTISED ?

  • Most people experience what we call natural hypnosis, or trance, several times during their day - maybe when doing a regular activity 'on automatic' such as travelling the same route to work every day, or when day dreaming, or when engrossed in a great book or film.
  • Not everyone can be hypnotised, for example, people who are unable to maintain a focus of attention can be difficult to hypnotise, such as:
  • Those intoxicated through alcohol or drugs.
  • The elderley, suffering with dementia.
  • Very young children (say, below age 5).

Otherwise, any volunteer, who is capable of reading a few pages from a book, can be hypnotised. However, if you choose not to be hypnotised then you won't be - the choice is yours.

HYPNOSIS CAN HELP WITH A VARIETY OF ISSUES

  • Anxiety
  • Confidence
  • Alcohol
  • Smoking
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks or anxiety attacks
  • Fears/phobias
  • Stress
  • Insomnia
  • Grief
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Social anxiety
  • Obsesssive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
  • Performance anxiety
  • Sexual difficulties
  • etc.

DURING HYPNOSIS

  • The body and conscious mind are completely relaxed - NOT asleep or unconscious.
  • Breathing and heart rate slow down.
  • The subconscious mind remains awake and receptive to suggestion.
  • The degree of hypnosis can be varied from a very light to a very deep state.

WHAT DOES HYPNOSIS FEEL LIKE?

  • If you have ever done any meditation it can feel very similar to that. Likewise, if you have relaxed on a beach and just day-dreamed for a few minutes it can be a comparable experience.
  • For most people being in hypnosis is very relaxing.

COMING OUT OF HYPNOSIS

  • Upon completion of the session, most people feel rested, relaxed and refreshed and are able to safely drive home.

IS HYPNOTHERAPY EFFECTIVE?

  • Yes, hypnotherapy is being used to help people resolve more and more issues.
  • As well as its fame for helping with stopping smoking, phobias, stress and anxiety, the NHS are currently running trials on its effectiveness on labour pains.
  • Famous people such as Matt Damon, Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Jimmy Connors have all used hypnotherapy for various reasons.

WILL I LOSE CONTROL IN HYPNOSIS?

  • Absolutely not. You have all the control during hypnotherapy as you have during your usual waking state and you can make choices just as easily.
  • Peter will accord you the same respect and freedom of decision making as you might expect with, for example, a counsellor or psychotherapist.

IS HYPNOTHERAPY SAFE?

  • It is very safe when used by a qualified hypnotherapist.
  • The subject remains in control at all times.
  • Hypnotherapy is approved by the British Medical Association.
  • Hypnosis should NOT be used, or ONLY WITH CARE, on people suffering from epilepsy, psychosis, schizophrenia etc.
  • Hypnotherapy can help to avoid the problems of many drugs based therapies, such as the risks of: addiction; dependency; overdose; adverse interaction with other drugs; side-effects, and withdrawal symptoms.
  • Upon completion of the session the majority of people will return to normal within a minute or so and be able to safely drive home and continue with their day.
  • Most people enjoy their hypnotherapy session and find it an interesting, helpful, and transformative, therapy.

IS HYPNOTHERAPY AN OFFICIALLY APPROVED METHOD OF TREATMENT?

Hypnotherapy has been assessed several time by medical authorities, and found to be a genuine and valid therapy. For example, in 1955 the BMA commissioned a subcommittee to a 2 year study of the medical application and efficacy of hypnotism.

The subcommittee concluded:

“The Subcommittee is satisfied after consideration of the available evidence that hypnotism is of value and may be the treatment of choice in some cases of so-called psycho-somatic disorder and psychoneurosis. It may also be of value for revealing unrecognized motives and conflicts in such conditions. As a treatment, in the opinion of the Subcommittee it has proved its ability to remove symptoms and to alter morbid habits of thought and behavior[...]”2

Additionally, the report stated:

“there is a place for hypnotism in the production of anesthesia or analgesia for surgical and dental operations, and in suitable subjects it is an effective method of relieving pain in childbirth without altering the normal course of labor.”2

The subcommittees report was officially approved as being official BMA policy, with the accompanying statement:

"For the past hundred years there has been an abundance of evidence that psychological and physiological changes could be produced by hypnotism which were worth study on their own account, and also that such changes might be of great service in the treatment of patients."2

In 1958, the American Medical Association (AMA) commissioned a similar (though more terse) report which endorsed the 1955 BMA report and, again, "the AMA council approved this report, rendering hypnotherapy an orthodox form of treatment"2.

THE KEY TAKE AWAY

Hypnosis itself only plays a very small part in Peter's therapy. However its use, at a very light level of trance, is essential, because it helps to facilitate the effective application of Peter's therapy - indeed many of Peter's client's might argue that they weren't actually in Hypnosis (!), and this is because they were perfectly awake and aware throughout their therapy and because only a very light level of Hypnotic 'trance' is required to facilitate Peter's therapy.
