Many people experience sexual difficulties at some point during their life. While some problems resolve themselves, some do not and professional help may be required. Hypnotherapy can be an effective treatment for many sexual issues.
Sexual difficulties are generally problems that prevent the individual or couple from enjoying sex and can make sex difficult. According to the NHS, it is estimated that one in 10 men and almost 50% of women are affected by a sexual problem. Sexual difficulties can occur early in an individual’s life, or develop suddenly after a previously satisfying sex life, or develop gradually.
Some of the most common sexual problems for men are performance anxiety, sexual dysfunction and premature ejaculation. For women, the most commonly experienced sexual problem is vaginismus.
Sexual problems may also include loss of desire and loss of arousal.
In many cases, sexual problems are a result of an underlying psychological issue, and are often triggered by stress, anxiety or fear.
There are two things that seem to surprise many people about the use of Hypnotherapy to help with sexual problems. issues and difficulties.
Firstly, people are surprised to hear that over some 40% of the enquiries received here at The Surrey Hypnotherapy Clinic relate to problems and difficulties of a sexual nature.
Secondly, people are surprised that problems, issues and difficulties of a sexual nature can be helped by Hypnotherapy at all ! But, when you think about it, it's really not so surprising after all, this is because the physical sex act is heavily interwoven with our thoughts, minds and emotions - and, in particular, the feelings, desires, wishes, and sense of attraction that we experience within our minds will determine whether we are attracted to any one particular person or type of person - and in what way we are attracted to any one particular person or type of person.
And because our emotions and feelings are so closely connected to our thoughts and to physical sex, it should be of little surprise to find that many sexual problems are not medical in nature but instead are created and influenced by the emotions and state of mind - which can be affected by stress, anxiety or fear.
For example, it is accepted now that stress, tension, tiredness, anxiety, guilt, fear, phobias and bad experiences can all have an adverse effect on sexual performance, drive or enjoyment.

Inhibited sexual desire (ISD) refers to a low level of sexual interest. The person with ISD fails to initiate or respond to their partner's desire for sexual activity. ISD may be primary (where the person has never felt much sexual desire or interest), or secondary (where the person used to possess sexual desire, but no longer does). ISD may also be either situational to the partner (the person with ISD is interested in other people, but not his or her partner), or it may be general (where the person with ISD has a lack of sexual interest in anyone). In the extreme form of sexual aversion, the person not only lacks sexual desire, but may find sex repulsive, revolting, and distasteful.
Inhibited sexual desire is the persistent loss of desire for sexual activity. It is common for sexual desire to fluctuate during an individual’s life, though if the problem persists it may be time to seek professional help. ISD is common in women but men can also be affected. Decreased sexual desire has been linked to depression, fatigue, stress, pregnancy, anxiety or relationship problems and ageing. However, it can also be caused by a fall in oestrogen or testosterone levels. If testosterone deficiency is the cause of ISD, replacement therapy is recommended. If not, an appropriate specialist can help try and determine the underlying cause.
Can be defined as as any sexual activity that feels out of control. A sex addict feels compelled to seek out and engage in sexual behaviour, in spite of the problems it may cause in their personal, social and work lives. Sexual addiction can take many forms, but it's generally characterised by behaviour that feels out of control.
This behaviour might include:
• excessive use of pornography
• compulsive masturbation
• exhibitionism
• voyeurism
• fetishes
• high-risk sex
• prostitution
• telephone or internet sex
• multiple affairs
• anonymous sexual encounters
A common men's health problem characterized by the consistent inability to sustain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse or the inability to achieve ejaculation, or both. Impotence can vary. It can involve a total inability to achieve an erection or ejaculation, an inconsistent ability to do so, or a tendency to sustain only very brief erections. Erectile dysfunction is also called impotence,
Erectile dysfunction (also known as impotence) is a condition characterised by the inability to develop or maintain an erection. It has been estimated that half of all men aged between 40 and 70 will experience it at some level. Impotence can be caused by a number of physical and psychological factors and may only occur in certain situations. If for example, a man is able to get an erection during masturbation, but not with their sexual partner, the cause may be psychological. Psychological causes include stress, anxiety and depression.
Definitions of premature ejaculation have ranged from "coming within six thrusts" to "coming within two minutes" and even "coming before your partner". The last one can be particularly misleading if you have a partner who likes to take up to an hour to reach orgasm. A simpler definition is that if you come before you want to and you feel you're not able to control it, then you're suffering from premature ejaculation (or PE for short).
Premature ejaculation is the most common sexual problem for men. PE is characterised by a lack of voluntary control over ejaculation. Although most men will experience this at least once during their life (often during the first sexual experiences) they soon learn ejaculatory control. The condition can be associated with performance anxiety, depression, sexual repression and lack of confidence. Some sex therapists or psychologists often use a series of exercises to help individuals improve ejaculatory control, such as the so-called ‘start-stop’ technique.
Dyspareunia is characterised by persistent pain with sexual activity. This is usually during penetration but can also occur during non-penetrative stimulation. The pain can be at the vaginal opening or further inside and can be extremely distressing. Pain during sex is commonly experienced after the menopause when there is a fall in oestrogen levels. If left untreated, dyspareunia can lead to a negative cycle of avoidance of sexual activity, anorgasmia or ISD.
Vaginismus is a sexual disorder that is characterized by the outer third of the vaginal muscles tightening, often painfully. A woman with vaginismus does not willfully or intentionally contract her vaginal muscles. However, when the vagina is going to be penetrated, the muscles tighten spontaneously due to psychological or other reasons. Vaginismus can occur under different circumstances. It can begin the first time vaginal penetration is attempted. This is known as "lifelong vaginismus." Alternately, vaginismus can begin after a period of normal sexual functioning. This is known as "acquired-type vaginismus." For some women, vaginal tightening occurs in all situations where vaginal penetration is attempted (generalized type). For other women, it occurs in only one or a few situations, such as during a gynecological examination at the doctor's office, or with a specific sex partner (situational type).
Vaginismus is a condition affecting a woman’s ability to engage in any form of vaginal penetration. Vaginismus is the involuntary spasm of the vaginal muscles, making sexual intercourse painful. Vaginismus can occur after a vaginal trauma, such as childbirth, through fear of pregnancy or relationship problems. It may also be a result of another physical condition.
