Problem gambling (or "ludomania", but usually referred to as "gambling addiction" or "compulsive gambling") is an urge to gamble continuously despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop.
Problem gambling is often defined by whether harm is experienced by the gambler or others, rather than by the gambler's behaviour. Severe problem gambling may be diagnosed as clinical pathological gambling if the gambler meets certain criteria. Pathological gambling is a common disorder that is associated with both social and family costs.
Problem gambling is characterised by many difficulties in limiting money and/or time spent on gambling which leads to adverse consequences for the gambler, others, or for the community.
Pathological gambling has been described by some as "being unable to resist impulses to gamble, which can lead to severe personal or social consequences".
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) is the handbook used by health care professionals in the United States and much of the world as the authoritative guide to the diagnosis of mental disorders. DSM contains descriptions, symptoms, and other criteria for diagnosing mental disorders.
The DSM-V has reclassified pathological gambling as "gambling disorder" and has listed the disorder under substance-related and addictive disorders rather than impulse-control disorders.
This is due to the symptomatology of the disorder resembling an addiction not dissimilar to that of substance-abuse.
Note, however, that it is our view that a classification of 'impulse control disorder' would probably be more appropriate. However, the DSM-V has produced the following diagnostic criteria, which might be useful.
Under the DSM-V ('V' is the latest, 5th, Version), in order for an individual to be to be diagnosed as having 'Gambling Disorder', an individual must have at least four of the following symptoms in a 12-month period:
In our view the main, and best, criteria is that the individual problem gambler will have had a number of genuine attempts at stopping gambling in the past, and failed to do so.
They genuinely see their problem as being a problem to themselves, and their loved ones, and they genuinely want to be able to stop gambling.
However they are unable to stop gambling by themselves - and they need help - which the Surrey Hypnotherapy Clinic can provide.
Hypnosis, Hypnotherapy Psychotherapy and Counselling can be used in combination to successfully help Gambling Addiction.
