"Emetophobia is a fear of vomiting or seeing others being sick. Those who experience emetophobia may also fear being out of control while they are being sick or fear being sick in public, which can trigger avoidance behaviours."1
Emetophobia is one of the least commonly talked about phobias, but one of the most prevalent. Emetophobia is very common and research has suggested that a fear of being sick affects 0.1% to 8.8% of the population, dependent upon the assessment criteria used.
Emetophobia can involve a fear of vomiting yourself and/or others vomiting. It is known by many names (e.g. emetophobia, specific phobia of vomiting (SPOV), vomit phobia, sickness phobia, fear of vomiting etc.).
Emetophobia is also associated with other fears and disorders, such as phagophobia (a fear of gagging, swallowing or choking), a fear of pregnancy, social anxiety and obsessional disorders.
At its root emetophobia, or fear of being sick, is about avoidance, control and disgust.
For some phobias and fears the solution can be fairly straightforward. For example, if you have a fear of flying one solution is fairly simple – travel by ship.
However, the solution is not so simple for sufferers of emetophobia because there is no predictability in someone being sick. Anyone at all might be sick, at any time, and for a multitude of reasons. This means that for the sufferer the opportunity to control their environment becomes increasingly more difficult, and exhausting. That doesn't stop the sufferer trying to control their environment though, and the next section lists some typical avoidant behaviours for emetophobia sufferers.
A significant focus on how to either avoid either being sick yourself, or how to avoid being in the vicinity of someone who may be sick can make a wide range of everyday situations very uncomfortable for the sufferer.
The following llist shows some of the situations that are likely to be avoided.
Even given the extraordinary lengths that people choose to avoid their fear, the relief that is gained by avoidance is minimal.
In some cases, because the phobia involves the induction of vomiting, sufferers have even been misdiagnosed as having anorexia or bulimia.
Emetophobia can have a massive impact on someone’s life. The sufferer may have to avoid restaurants, pubs, public transport and social occasions. For some, the symptoms can be so severe that they cannot leave the house at all.
It can also be a problem for mother’s or adults involved in looking after children, such as teachers and classroom assistants and some people are even deterred from pursuing their preferred occupation, as, say, a nursery nurse, because of their emetophobia.
Of all the phobias emetophobia is probably just about the worst and most debilitating phobia to have because of the way that it can completely take over a person's life by creating avoidant behaviours.
Emetophobia, like most fears and phobias, is created by the unconscious mind as a protective mechanism. At some point in your past, there was likely a significant, but now long forgotten, event linking vomiting, throwing up, or being sick, with emotional trauma.
Hypnotherapy can be used to treat and help Emetophobia, using a combination of Hypnoanalysis and Suggestion Hypnotherapy, and can be extremely effective in identifying the originating emotional trauma and thereby removing the symptoms of Emetophobia; it can give you a new life.
People who suffer with this fear find it hard to enjoy a normal lifestyle and are constantly having to deal with a series of irrational thoughts and emotions associated with their fear.
A fear of vomiting like this, like most phobias, is often caused by past experiences which we have, very often, long since forgotten. But the feelings experienced at those times have been bottled up over the years and help to drive and maintain the thoughts, feelings and avoidant behaviours of the sufferer. The human mind and body will remain afraid to release these feelings forever, unless you find somewhere and someone you can trust to be understanding and skilled enough to help you let the feelings go forever.
