Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) - Help & Hypnosis Therapy Treatment Cure for IBS

IBS ? - I can help you !

Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS, is an increasingly common and distressing complaint. It is widely accepted that conventional medicine can very often discover no organic cause or infection, and that there is a strong psychological component in its cause because the condition generally gets worse when either worried, nervous, stressed, or when feeling emotional in some way.

IBS is a condition from which it can be hard to find relief using a medical approach, but which can be greatly helped, and often cured, by using Hypnontherapy. Hypnotherapy is now used to treat IBS effectively and safely in some hospitals in the U.K.

I have successfully helped to relieve many Irritable Bowel Syndrome sufferers of their symptoms, when many other remedies that they have tried, over many years, have not worked. And many of these IBS sufferers were people who had suffered for many years and with such severe symptoms that they were prevented from leading a normal life.

IBS is more than just aches, cramps or pain. It also involves the discomfort between attacks and the anxiety of having to live in its shadow - constantly being on edge as to when the next episode will occur. It can be a very real and debilitating condition. It can limit and restrict not only your diet, but also your general feeling of well being and your enjoyment of life. And the inability of doctors to pinpoint and treat the cause can be very demoralising and frustrating.

However, when no organic or physical cause can be detected, and no medical cure for your IBS can be found it is recognised, even by doctors and medical science, that your symptoms and attacks are very often connected to, and associated with, your psychological and emotional state at any one time.

This really does make sense when you think about it. One of the first parts of our body to respond to our emotions is usually our bowels or intestines. We all know the effect of extreme fright ! But also, you hear phrases like "having knots (or butterflies) in my stomach" when people talk about being anxious or nervous.

Very often, you yourself may be already aware of how increased anxiety, worry and stress in your life can often coincide with worsening symptoms. For some IBS sufferers they are acutely aware that their symptoms occur, or worsen in their severity, in terms of  frequency, duration and intensity, almost as a direct result of times of increased stress and anxiety in their life.

However, often people are puzzled because they cannot think of anything in particular which might be stressing them. In these cases, our bodies are usually reacting to subconscious stress, which, by definition, you would not be consciously aware of. And maybe you are not aware of it simply because you have had to live with it for so many years  that, for you, your stressed emotional state is now 'normal' (for you).

I use therapeutic Hypnosis to help you to remove the effects of any anxiety or discomfort that may be contributing to your internal stress and that results in pain, discomfort, and other IBS symptoms. Many times these are things that you yourself would never have thought were connected with your problem. But the permanent results speak for themselves!

The treatment typically takes just a few weekly sessions to complete, and usually results in a permanent and significant release from much of the discomfort and anxiety that surrounds your IBS symptoms.

People also notice a great boost in their positivity and self-confidence, and gain a new lease of life and freedom because their IBS symptoms are now no longer holding them back from enjoying life and doing the things that they want to do.

What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome ?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder of the gut and digestive system that causes the bowel to be very sensitive. The condition causes recurring pain and discomfort in the abdomen and often, the nerves and muscles don't work as they should.

Whilst there is believed to be no medical cure for irritable bowel syndrome, there are certain treatments and lifestyle changes that can help manage symptoms. Hypnotherapy is an IBS treatment that is recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE).

IBS is thought to affect one in five people at some point during their lifetime and, according to some research, is one of the most common disorders of the digestive system. Some studies have found that women are more likely than men to suffer from IBS, and their symptoms may be more severe.

Many people living with irritable bowel syndrome find their symptoms to be an occasional nuisance, however, for other people, the condition can seriously affect their quality of life. While IBS can develop at any time, it often starts to develop when a person is in their twenties.

Some individuals with irritable bowel syndrome experience constipation, others have diarrhoea, while some may suffer from both. The pain can range from mild to severe, and may occur at a particular time of the day.

What are the symptoms of IBS ?

Symptoms can vary from person to person and can be experienced at differing severities. In some people, the symptoms seem to be triggered by something they have had to eat or drink, stressful periods, or food poisoning.

Some of the more common symptoms include:

  • pain and discomfort in the abdomen
  • bloated abdomen
  • gas
  • indigestion
  • feeling full
  • nausea
  • diarrhoea
  • constipation
  • cramping
  • heartburn
  • muscle pains

What are the causes of IBS ?

While the exact cause of IBS is unclear, some research suggests that it is associated with over-activity of the gut. For example, when the contractions of the muscles in the gut wall become abnormal or overactive. Problems such as increased sensitivity to the amount of gas in the bowel and increased serotonin levels (which occur after eating at certain times of the day or certain foods) are also thought to play a role in the development of IBS.

There is also evidence to suggest that a person’s emotional state can trigger problems in the gut. Intense feelings of anxiety and stress may cause the individual to suffer irregular bowel habits and symptoms can worsen. These feelings may in time interfere with the regularity of the digestive system, even in those who have not previously experienced IBS.

IBS Treatment - NICE Guidelines

One IBS treatment recognised by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) is hypnotherapy.

NICE recommend that people living with IBS who do not respond to pharmacological treatments after 12 months consider a referral for psychological therapy:

"Referral for psychological interventions (cognitive behavioural therapy [CBT], hypnotherapy and/or psychological therapy) should be considered for people with IBS who do not respond to pharmacological treatments after 12 months"

(View the full NICE guidelines on IBS).

Hypnotherapy for IBS

Hypnotherapy for IBS can help an individual learn relaxation techniques, as well as learning new ways to manage stress. Our state of mind can have an impact on our physical well-being. Therefore the tension, stress and anxiety often caused by IBS may affect the digestive system and also undermine the immune system, and further compromise health.

A number of clinical studies have found hypnotherapy for IBS to be an effective treatment, including a recent study published in The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology journal.

"Results showed that immediately after treatment, participants in the two hypnotherapy groups reported satisfactory relief at substantially higher rates than those who received educational supportive care, and these benefits persisted for nine months after the treatment ended."

What are the long term benefits of Hypnotherapy for IBS ?

A long term study of the benefits of hypnotherapy for Irritable Bowel Syndrome was published by the British Medical Journal in 2003 - from the abstract:

"Background and aims:

There is now good evidence from several sources that hypnotherapy can relieve the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome in the short term. However, there is no long term data on its benefits and this information is essential before the technique can be widely recommended. This study aimed to answer this question.

Patients and methods:

204 patients prospectively completed questionnaires scoring symptoms, quality of life, anxiety, and depression before, immediately after, and up to six years following hypnotherapy. All subjects also subjectively assessed the effects of hypnotherapy retrospectively in order to define their “responder status”.

Results:

71% of patients initially responded to therapy. Of these, 81% maintained their improvement over time while the majority of the remaining 19% claimed that deterioration of symptoms had only been slight. With respect to symptom scores, all items at follow up were significantly improved on pre-hypnotherapy levels (p<0.001) and showed little change from post-hypnotherapy values. There were no significant differences in the symptom scores between patients assessed at 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5+ years following treatment. Quality of life and anxiety or depression scores were similarly still significantly improved at follow up (p<0.001) but did show some deterioration. Patients also reported a reduction in consultation rates and medication use following the completion of hypnotherapy.

Conclusion:

This study demonstrates that the beneficial effects of hypnotherapy appear to last at least five years. Thus it is a viable therapeutic option for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome."
